In the September 27, 2008 article in the Toledo Blade, Mr. Gaillardetz, in reference to Mr. Obama, concludes his article by saying that “There is a pro-life candidate out there — and it turns out he’s a Democrat!” In light of the fact that Mr. Obama, make that President Obama now, is pushing the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), how can he possibly be considered the “pro-life” candidate? Thankfully, the Most Reverend Leonard P. Blair, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Toledo, pointed out in an October 4th, 2008 article in the same paper that FOCA would “deprive the American people in all 50 states of the freedom they now have to enact modest restraints and regulations on the abortion industry, and would coerce all Americans into subsidizing and promoting abortion with their tax dollars”. Bishop Blair also points out that Mr. Gaillardetz’s “opinions regarding the issue of abortion, and Roe vs. Wade in particular, do not reflect the clear and consistent moral position of the United States Catholic bishops”.
I find the decision to invite Mr. Gaillardetz as a speaker to Plenary Assembly of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops difficult to understand.
